City of Cape Town was facing a challenge with litter and wanted a campaign and clear messaging encouraging residents to throw away their trash. CoCT had also just launched a new mascot; Bingo the bin.
Our insight was twofold. Firstly, tossing the trash is so much more fun when gamified – aiming your rubbish for the bin. Secondly, Cape Town was the cleanest city in South Africa, but why not aim higher and make it the cleanest on the continent? Why not aim for clean?
Changing bins into goalposts was the idea. Basketball hoops, soccer nets, target practice – if we could turn any iconic green bin into a goal everyone wins. Client also wanted a snappy line like our legendary ‘zappit in the zibi bin’ and we merged the line and concept. We brought Bingo to life in 3D and rigged him up to toss the trash. These stickers now live on many bins across the city.

Please note I was no longer under contract with Ogilvy when this was shot – I was part of the initial concept and signed off storyboard and script.
